WHY WORK WITH NANICHI ROOTS
For research in the late 19th (late 1800's) and 20th centuries (1900s), Puerto Rico has some of the best-kept records in the world. 

The real difficulty begins when you push past the early 19th century (early 1800's and before).

* Language Barrier & Old Handwriting
The vast majority of historical records are in Spanish and documents from the 19th century and earlier are written in archaic cursive styles (paleography) that can be nearly impossible for an untrained eye to decipher.

* Tracing Enslaved Ancestors
This is the most difficult and specialized area of Puerto Rican genealogy. Tracing these lines requires deep expertise.

* Record Loss and "Brick Walls"
Puerto Rico's history of natural disasters means that in some towns, crucial records have been permanently destroyed. This can create a "brick wall"—a point where the paper trail goes cold, which requires creative and alternative research strategies.
